Summary: Disappointing, not reassuring
Comment: I have to agree with another review that said this book made them feel worse about flying. I figured I would just skip the chapter about air disasters, but in many other parts of the book, the author explains a concept, then proceeds to give an example of how some pilot or airplane went wrong in this area and everyone died. Now I know just how many things can go wrong ... I think ignorance is bliss.

Summary: Good book.
Comment: This book is good if you want lots of info about a plane from a pilot's perspective. Not really aimed at the nervous flyer, but lots of good info.

Summary: Entertaining and Informative
Comment: Patrick Smith has some great stories, and he gets the facts across in an interesting way. His writing style is so enjoyable to read, it'd probably be an enjoyable book even for someone with a pilot's license who knows about flying. He has a great weekly column [...] too (Fridays).

Summary: Takes the heat off
Comment: As an airline pilot, this book saves me explaining every detail of flying repeatedly to, what are often, the same people. Very accurate information presented in a simple manner. A real voice saver!!

Summary: A Good Balance
Comment: When dealing with an area of expertise that is particularly technical or complicated, it is often difficult to know where to draw the lines of communication, as it were: how much jargon to use, how deep to go. Mr. Smith has done an excellent job of conveying to the nonprofessional a wealth of information about a highly complex subject in a manner that is easily understood. While I don't necessarily agree with his every point (particularly where it leans toward the political), and this is not a resource for the professional seeking to advance his technical education, it is very well written and worth the read for anybody. Editorial Reviews:
More than ever, air travel is a focus of curiosity, intrigue and anxiety. This year, some half a billion passengers will ride aboard the ten largest US airlines alone. Fair to say each one has a question, a doubt, and a lingering fear in the back of his or her mind. We take to the air routinely, yet few of us understand the how and why of jetting from New York to London in six hours. Patrick Smith, an airline pilot and author of Salon.com's popular air travel column, unravels the secrets and tells you all there is to know about the strange and fascinating world of commercial flight.

* Insights into safety, security, and the nuts and bolts of how planes fly

* Straight talk on turbulence, air traffic control, windshear and accidents

* The history, color and controversy of the world's airlines

* The awe and oddity of being a pilot

* The poetry and drama of airplanes, airports, and travelling abroad

Patrick speaks eloquently to our fears and curiosities, incorporating anecdotes, memoir, and a life's passion for flight. He tackles your toughest concerns, debunks conspiracies and urban myths, and in a rarely heard voice dares to return a dash of romance and glamour to air travel.
